Health Sciences Admission

Health Sciences programs have separate admission requirements. General admission to the college does not guarantee admission to selective Health Sciences programs. Selective admission is required due to the limited number of clinical facilities available and program accreditation standards. All Health Sciences applicants will be placed in the General Studies program with pending acceptance into a specific Health Science program. Applicants are responsible for assembling and submitting all required application materials by the deadlines listed for each Health Sciences program. The Department of Health Sciences requires all students admitted to a Health Sciences program receive clearance on criminal background checks before final acceptance is offered into a program within the College. Students must submit an application for admission and all required materials by Jan 5.

Health Sciences Admission Deadlines: January 5

Admission to the Health Science Programs is competitive and completion of minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance to a program. The Health Science departments reserve the right to select the most qualified applicants and change the curriculum as deemed necessary at any time for preparation to new and emerging roles in society.

Credits for Microbiology, Anatomy and Physiology I and II and Developmental Psychology will be accepted in transfer to a Health Science Program only if they are completed within 5 years of entry. All required science courses must be in-person (no online format), be 4 credits, and have a lab component. A grade of C or better is also required. Anatomy and Physiology I and II must be completed at the same college for acceptance.

Health Sciences Background Checks & Clearances

Due to the mandated regulations by area clinical agencies, in which LCCC Health Science students participate in clinical rotations, acceptance into the Health Science Programs is conditional-based until all background checks and screenings have been successfully completed, submitted and approved. All background check forms and instructions are provided to the student from the Health Services Department in their acceptance letter or at program orientation. Some items will be required for submission at an earlier date.

Regarding Background Clearances, the student is required to submit all paperwork that may accompany their background clearance results for review. If any report indicates a positive criminal history or a student incurs a positive criminal history while enrolled, the student will be prohibited from entrance into the Health Science's Program or will be immediately dismissed, if currently enrolled. While enrolled in a Health Science's Program, most items need to be updated annually.

Background Checks & Requirements

• FBI Criminal Background Check (Fingerprinting) - official, blue result page is required.
• PA State Police Criminal Record Check
• PA Child Abuse Clearance
• 3 Year DMV History - must be completed on official state DMV website; if student does not have license, they will need to acquire an official state photo ID to complete this item.
• 10PAN Drug Screening
• Liability Insurance
• Basic Life Support CPR certification
• Physical Exam
• Physical must be completed by a licensed physician, CRNP, or PA-C. Must document that the student is in good physical and mental health, free from all communicable diseases, and is physically and mentally capable of fulfilling all duties as required by each Health Science Program.
• 2 Step TB Skin Screening or Clear Chest X-Ray within 3 years

Immunization Requirements

• Hepatitis B - proof of 3 dose series or positive Hepatitis B surface Antibody (HBsAb) quantitative titer (greater than 10 mIU/ml). Note - if the student does not have an adequate HBsAb after the second series of the hepatitis B vaccine, the student is considered a non-responder and further medical assessment will be required.
• Varicella - 2 dose series or a positive IgG titer. An affidavit of having the disease is not accepted.
• Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) within 10 years
• Measles/Mumps/Rubella - 2 MMR doses or positive IgG titers for each individual item
• Influenza vaccine is required of Health Science students to participate in clinical. This will be submitted once the new flu season begins each year. If waived, most student will wear a mask while participating in the clinical area.
• COVID-19 vaccination- 2 doses (proof of boosters, if available) OR 1 dose J&J (proof of boosters, if available). Form of proof may be a copy of vaccination card or patient immunization record printout from physician or pharmacy.

It should be noted that LCCC does not mandate Flu and Covid-19 vaccinations. Waivers are accepted for general, on-campus classroom settings. However, all Health Science Programs must follow the current mandates and regulations of the attending clinical sites due to existing contracts. Acceptance of Waiver and/or Medical/Religious Exemption depends on approval from the clinical site. If the student registers for a clinical site mandating either of the vaccinations, accommodations for clinical site placement cannot be provided.

Health Sciences Admission Deferral Requests
If you have been offered admission to a health sciences program, you may request to defer your admission for up to one year.

Deferral Policies

• Deferred admission may be granted to admitted students who have submitted their Deferral Request Form and non-refundable enrollment deposit.
• Nursing Deferral requests must be submitted no later than the enrollment deposit deadline date.
• Deferred admission may be requested up to one year from the term of your admission.
• Deferred students can remain enrolled at LCCC and must maintain all admission requirements which pertain to each Health Sciences program to remain eligible for deferment.
• Students planning to enroll at another college or university are not eligible for deferral.
• Financial aid offers cannot be deferred. Students awarded financial aid must reapply for aid. Existing student loan payments are not eligible for deferment. Student loans can be deferred once a student starts their health sciences program.
• Deferral requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the Health Sciences Selection Committee. Supporting documentation must be provided with the application of deferment when necessary.

Nursing Admissions Information

To be considered for the Nursing Program, applicants must:
Complete an application for admission to the Nursing Program
Submit official transcript(s):
• Official high school transcripts or GED. If you previously attended LCCC and did not enroll within the previous two years you will need to resubmit your high school transcripts.
• Submit official transcripts from all previously attended colleges and universities. Student-issued or unofficial transcripts are not accepted for transfer evaluation credit. Submit college/university transcripts to the LCCC Registrar Office.
Complete all prerequisite coursework:
• Applicants must provide evidence of final grade "C" or higher in high school or college level algebra, biology and chemistry courses.
Score a minimum of 58.7% on the TEAS Exam (total or overall score).
• The TEAS information is located at and may be taken proctored online or at an in person location of their choice. The TEAS scores must officially be transferred to LCCC before established application deadline.
• TEAS scores are valid for two years.
• Retest Policy: There is a minimum of 30 days between attempts.

Recommendations

• Complete all General Education courses in the Nursing curriculum. These courses are not required for admission.
• Students are encouraged to meet with an Academic Advisor for assistance with selecting a plan of study and course selection.

Students who graduated and received their LPN are exempt from taking the TEAS exam

Nursing Acceleration Challenge Exam (NACE)
Once accepted into the LPN-RN Program, all LPN's may attempt to challenge the NUR-110: Nursing Concepts I (9 credits). A charge is associated with this challenge exam.

Recommendations

• Complete all General Education courses in the Nursing curriculum. These courses are not required for admission.
• Current LPN applicants who do not wish to challenge NUR 110 and achieve advanced placement into NUR 115 should apply to the Traditional Program option.

LPN-RN Program Selection Criteria

• Completion of minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the LPN-RN Nursing program. All admission materials are required to be received by the Office of Admissions no later than the application deadline for consideration for admission.

Dental Hygiene Admissions Information

To be considered for the Dental Hygiene Program, applicants must:
Complete an application for admission to the Dental Hygiene Program
All students accepted into the Dental Hygiene Program must be age 18 or older by November 1 of their first Fall semester in order to be eligible to purchase liability insurance.

• Official high school transcripts or GED. If you previously attended LCCC and did not enroll within the previous two years you will need to resubmit your high school transcripts.

To be considered for the Expanded Functions Dental Assisting Program, applicants must:

• DANB Radiation Health and Safety Certificate

To be considered for the EMS/Paramedic Program, applicants must:

Complete pre-requisite courses:
• Applicants seeking Certificate of Specialization in Advanced Life Support-Paramedic (CS.ALS) must provide documentation of PA. Department of Health, Bureau of EMS, Emergency Medical Technician.

Notes

• The application deadline for the EMS & ALS-Paramedic Programs is July 1
• The EMS Program will notify perspective candidates of the admission process including personal interviews, program standards, guideline review, and Platinum Education EMS Entry Assessment. Acceptance to the Paramedic Program is conditional until all clearances and background checks have been verified through the LCCC Health Sciences Department. Applicants not accepted are required to reapply each year. The College reserves the right to exercise discretion to select the most qualified candidates based on employer recommendations, interview, and entry assessment scores.
