What does a college writing center do?
A writing center is a designated space for students to work one-on-one with staff through any stage of the writing process and provide detailed feedback and instruction. Writing can be intimidating and we're here to help!
Prewriting: We can help you narrow down a topic, understand a rubric, and navigate research topics (though the librarians are best for research support!)
Writing: Stuck on your conclusion? Aren't sure about your thesis? Unsure about citation style? Need help just making sure things sound right? We can help!
Revision: Once you receive feedback from a proofreader, either by us or your professor, we can help ensure you meet the rubric and revise your paper fully.
Why should I use this service?
Studies have shown that students who use writing center services will demonstrate significantly better college writing performance. Plus, it's free! There is no shame in asking for help - writing can be complicated and we meet you where you are.
How do I make an appointment? Can I submit my paper for review?
Reach out to [email protected] or stop by room 903 during our hours. We do not offer asynchronous reviews this semester. For now, we will meet synchronously.
Do I have to have any prerequisites?
No. We can support students across all majors and courses from their very first semester. We can accommodate writing assignments of any length, topic or formatting style!
How can I avoid missing deadlines?
Make sure to reach out in advance to guarantee turn-around time and that you don't miss any due dates. We cannot accommodate deadlines of 24 hours or less. It's especially important to plan ahead for our busier times (mid-term and end-of-semester).
What can't the writing center staff do?
We cannot copyedit, re-write, revise or submit your work. We will not accept or revise AI-generated writing. We also can't grade your work nor estimate what a grade will be, but we can make sure your assignment matches the rubric! We also do not tutor - we work with students on individual assignments. There is tutoring offered by the Student Support Services Department for broader support with writing if needed.
