ESL (English as a Second Language) Program
The ALTA Program provides FREE basic ESL classes in Luzerne County. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are designed for adults with limited English proficiency who were not born in the United States or whose first language is not English and who have difficulty speaking, reading, writing, or understanding English.

ESL classes can help you get a job or a new job, attend college or advanced training, or prepare for the English test to become a U.S. citizen. Adults 18 years and older may enroll in classes.
To get started, prospective students must complete an orientation where Reading and Listening skills are tested.

Q. How do I sign up for classes?
A. You can complete the Request for Information survey , call the ALTA Program office at 570-740-0325, or email us at [email protected]. We will add your information to a waiting list for the next orientation.
Q. What happens at orientation?
A. All students must complete the required orientation session before beginning classes. During orientation, you will:
- Complete initial testing to determine your starting skill level (reading & listening)
- Meet ALTA staff who will explain program expectations and support services
- Discuss class placement and scheduling
Q. When is orientation?
A. Orientation is typically scheduled four times a year (Winter, Spring, Summer & Fall) for two days and takes 2-3 hours each day. You must complete orientation prior to starting classes.
Q. When are classes offered?
A. We currently offer morning and afternoon class times. All instruction is delivered in-person.
Classes are held at the LCCC Centers in Wilkes-Barre and Hazleton. Your class assignment will be scheduled based on your testing results and availability.
Q. How often do classes meet?
A. Most classes meet 2-3 days per week, depending on the level and location. Attendance is important for progressing through the program and meeting eligibility requirements.
Q. Is there a cost to participate?
A. No. The ALTA Program offers ESL classes at no charge.
Q. What do I need to bring to class?
A. Students should bring:
- A notebook or binder
- A pen or pencil
- A willingness to learn and participate
All other instructional materials are provided.
Q. Can I start classes now?
A. New students are enrolled four times per year. When you contact our office, your information will be added to the waiting list in the order received. Wait times may be up to six months depending on location and time of year.
Q. Why does it take so long before I can start class?
A. Wait times depend on demand and classroom space. Students are contacted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Q. How will I know it is time to attend orientation?
A. We will email you when it is time for orientation. If you do not respond within 3 days, your name may be removed from the waitlist. Please monitor your email regularly, including spam/junk folders.
Q. What if my contact information changes?
A. Contact the ALTA office to update your email. It is very important that your information remains current.
