The Adult Learners' Training and Assistance (ALTA) Program at

to adults 18 and older who wish to prepare to take a high school equivalency test
(GED® or HiSet®).

The GED® test preparation classes are designed to help adults earn their
General Education Development (GED®) credential. Whether you're
looking to further your education, advance in your career, or accomplish a
personal milestone, our expert instructors are here to guide you every step
of the way.
Our comprehensive curriculum covers the four subject areas of the GED® test:
- Math
- Science
- Social Studies
- Reasoning Through Language Arts
With flexible learning options, personalized support, and dedicated instructors,
you'll be well-prepared to succeed in obtaining your high school equivalency.

Q. How do I enroll in the ALTA Program?
A. All students must complete a required orientation session before beginning classes. During orientation, you will:
- Complete initial testing to determine your starting skill level (reading & math)
- Receive an overview of the GED® exam and subject areas
- Meet ALTA staff who will explain program expectations and support services
- Discuss class placement and scheduling
Q. When is orientation?
A. Orientation is typically scheduled four times per year (Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall). It lasts two days and takes approximately 2-3 hours each day. You must complete orientation prior to starting classes.
Q. When are classes offered?
A. We offer flexible class times to support different schedules, including:
- Morning classes
- Afternoon classes
- Evening classes
- In-person and/or online instruction (depending on availability)
Classes are held at the LCCC Centers in Wilkes-Barre and Hazleton, as well as on the main campus in Nanticoke. Class assignments are based on testing results and availability.
Q. How often do classes meet?
A. Most classes meet 2-3 days per week, depending on level and location. Attendance is important for progressing through the program and meeting eligibility requirements.
Q. Is there a cost to participate?
A. No. The ALTA Program offers preparation classes at no charge.
Q. What do I need to bring to class?
A. Students should bring:
- A notebook or binder
- A pen or pencil
- A willingness to learn and participate
All other instructional materials are provided.
Q. How long will it take to earn my GED®?
A. Every student's timeline is different. Progress depends on starting skill level, attendance consistency, and study habits. Staff regularly review progress and will discuss when you are ready to test.
Q. Do you help with GED® test registration?
A. Yes. Once staff determine you are ready, we assist with creating your GED® account and scheduling your exams.
Q. Can I start classes now?
A. New students are typically enrolled four times per year. When you contact our office, your information is added to the waiting list. Wait times vary by location and time of year and may be up to six months.
Q. Why does it take so long before I can start class?
A. Wait times depend on demand and classroom space. Students are contacted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Q. How will I know it is time to attend orientation?
A. We will email you when it is time to schedule orientation. Students are contacted in the order information is received. If you do not respond within three (3) days, your name may be removed from the waitlist. Please monitor your email regularly, including spam/junk folders.
Q. What if my contact information changes?
A. Contact the ALTA office to update your email address. It is very important that your contact information is current.
